Here is a list of available courses:

Cisco 1

Suggested preparation:         Computer applications class

Cisco 1 is a one-semester, two hours per day course providing a practical, technical introduction to networking.  The course appeals to those interested in careers as network technicians, network engineers, network administrators, and help-desk staff.  This is the first of four sequential courses leading to designation as a Cisco certified network associate (CCNA).

 

Cisco 2

Suggested preparation:         Cisco 1

Cisco 2 is a one-semester, two hours per day course.  The course is the second of four courses leading to designation as a Cisco certified network associate (CCNA).  This course focuses on initial router configuration, software management, routing protocol configuration, and access control lists.  Students completing the course may continue to the third and fourth Cisco courses at HFCC or a Cisco academy.

 

GIS-Certification

(Geographic Information Systems)

Suggested preparation:         Science 1, 2

                                              Math 1,2

                                              Computer applications class

                                              Advanced Microsoft class

GIS-Certification is a two-year (four semesters), two hours per day course in which students use a locally customized geographic information system to learn about their local community, using the same data NASA uses to study their state, county, and school areas.  The course introduces students to remote sensing technology through academic study and applied instruction.  Students successfully completing the course may pass a qualifying test to earn STARS certification through NASA’s Stennis Space Center. Students will learn to display, analyze and create data used to solve real world problems.

 

Cartography (Graphic Data Display)

Suggested preparation:        Algebra, Geometry

Cartography is the first semester of a year-long, one hour sequence (Students take Basics of GIS second semester) that draws on the basic skills of drafting, technical drawing and graphic design to display data in an assortment of HAND DRAWN maps and charts.  This course focuses on displaying data in graphic formats.  Students will complete approximately one project per week.  In addition to learning about the history, theory and techniques of map-making, students will explore topics drawn from all MBCC clusters including: property laws and ownership, the U.S. Census, public health monitoring, global automotive sales, airline routing, etc. 

Basics of GIS (Computer Mapping)

Suggested preparation:        Algebra, Geometry

Basics of GISis the second semester of a year-long, one hour sequence (Students take Cartography during the firstsemester) that focuses on the use of computer software to analyze data on using electronic mapping techniques.  Students will learn operate the software without having to master the scientific and technical background required in the GIS certification program.  Rather, students will complete many short tutorials and complete two individualized, local projects.  The course is self-paced and requires the students to be responsible for keeping up with a demanding schedule of assignments.

Digital Media Creation

Suggested preparation:      Computer applications class

Digital Media Creation is the first semster of a year-long, one hour sequence (students take Intro. to Web Page Design second semester).  The course introduces students to the use of computers to create a variety of digitial media including text, images, video and sound.

Introduction to Web Page Design

Suggested preparation:      Computer applications class, Digital Media Creation

Introduction to Web Page Design is a one-semester, one hour per day class offered concurrently at the MBCC and in the district’s three high schools.  It is the second semester of a year-long sequence at the MBCC (beginning with Digital Media Creation).  The course includes a short history of the internet and then explores web sites to prepare for designing well-functioning sites. 

 

Advanced Web Page Design

Suggested preparation:         Introduction to Web Page Design

Advance Web Page Design is a one-year, two hours per day course in which students gain hands on computer experience using web development tools such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash.  Students also learn about networks, the internet, intranets, and copyright issues.  Students are expected to create a well-designed, well-functioning web site.
