Student Policies and Expectations at the Berry Center
The MBCC establishes a relationship of trust based upon the district’s Core Values (honesty, respect for self and others, responsibility, integrity, courtesy, and citizenship). No student has the right to interfere with the education of fellow students or with the educational environment. Policies, procedures, and practices contained in this handbook are designed to provide for the safety and welfare of students attending the center.
Academic Honesty: Students are evaluated by the success they have (and demonstrate) in their understanding of the necessary concepts, ideas, models, etc. that are a part of the Center. As such, they must produce original work Examples of what not to do include: plagiarism, copying on tests, collaboration on homework when not permitted, or allowing another student to use your work. Violation of the honor code of academic honesty will result in disciplinary action.
Attendance/Tardiness/Parent Call-In/Sign-Out: Students are expected to adhere to the district’s attendance policies. Teachers will maintain accurate daily attendance records. Teachers and/or center staff will notify parents/guardians of excessive absences and tardiness.
Tardiness is not being physically in the classroom when instruction begins; tardiness is a disruption of the educational process and a discourtesy to fellow students and teachers. Excessive tardiness may adversely affect course achievement and may also result in administrative discipline. Students are expected to sign in in the center office when arriving late.
When a student must be absent from school, the parent/guardian is asked to notify the center office between 7:30 and 11:00 a.m. on the day of absence. Absences without parental/guardian notification to the center are considered unexcused.
Students who must leave the center before their session ends must sign out in the center office. Students will not be permitted to leave early without parental/guardian permission or notification.
Daily Schedule: First session classes at the center will begin at 7:35 a.m. each day the center is open; students will return to their home high schools following dismissal at 10:25 a.m. Students in the second session will begin at 11:15 a.m. and return to their home high schools (on district provided transportation) following dismissal at 1:55 p.m. The center office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Discipline: Discipline standards for the center are the same as those outlined in the Dearborn Public Schools Student Code of Conduct. Copies of the code are available from the center office.
Emergency Drills: Fire and disaster drills are held periodically through the school year. All students, teachers, guests, and others in the building must take part in the drills. Procedures will be explained to students in each class. Each student should become familiar with the fire and disaster drill rules for each teaching/learning location in the building.
Report Cards: Report cards are issued every six weeks of each semester. The report card is a progress report to students and parents regarding academic, attendance, and citizenship achievement during the reported time frame. The third report card of the semester contains the student’s final grade for that course along with credit earned status and semester and overall grade point averages.
Transportation: Transportation to and from the center will be provided by the district. Students are expected to ride the district-arranged transportation at all times, unless they have parental permission. Students driving to the center must obtain written permission from parents and home school administration. Also, students driving to the center must obtain and properly display any required identification for parking. At the center students are expected to park only in areas designated for student parking.
School Property/Lockers/Food in Classrooms: The appearance of the building, furnishings, and property in general reflect the pride students show in the center. Students are commended for the respect shown for center and neighborhood property, and students are expected to always respect the properties of the center and neighborhood homeowners and businesses.
The center contains hall lockers. At the beginning of the school year students will be assigned lockers. Students are expected to keep their lockers neat, clean, and locked at all times. (Please note: The school district retains ownership of lockers, and thus they may be subject to periodic inspection. A search of a student’s locker by a school official may take place, if reasonable grounds exist for suspecting the search will turn up evidence that the student has violated either the law or district policies.)
For sanitary and safety reasons, food should not be taken into or consumed in classroom and lab areas.
