Design Concepts: A New Course
-
Design Concepts is a new course that was offered for the first time during the 2005-06 school year, with the opening of the new Michael Berry Career Center.
-
Design Concepts is open to Juniors and Seniors from any Dearborn Public Schools high school.
-
While no pre-requisites are required, it is highly recommended that students take the intro art class as well as at least 2 advanced art classes at their home high school before they take Design Concepts. Seniors or Juniors elect Design Concepts for one or two years.
-
Electing Design Concepts is a year-long, 2 semester commitment.
-
Each semester of Design Concepts is a 2-hour block. The first year consists of Design Concepts 1 and 2 (semesters 1 & 2), while the second year consists of Design Concepts 3 and 4 (semesters 1 & 2).

Design Concepts: What we cover
In this class You will learn about the artistic side of the design industry and the industry side of art! Design Concepts covers 2-dimensional as well as 3-dimensional design:
-
In 2-dimensional we cover graphic design, communication design, advertising, and illustration.

This leads into visual communication, where students learn how to professionally and realistically draw 3-dimensional objects and illustrate them, such as cubes, spheres, cylinders and cones, as well as correct perspective drawing. These exercises are necessary in order for designers to be able to "visually communicate" their 3-dimensional ideas.

When students have adequately developed their visual communication skills, the class moves into 3-dimensional design, which covers product design & furniture design, and later (in the second year) transportation design.

-
Students use their visual communication skills to design everyday products such as chairs, teapots, cell phones and automobiles.
-
They then apply what they learned in the 2-dimensional part of the class in order to render, illustrate advertise and promote their 3-D designs:

Who benefits from this class?
-
Students most suited for this class are those who take the development of their art & design skills seriously, or want to begin developing their art and design skills because they may be interested in the design field as a possible career after high school.

-
Although the coursework offered in this class in very rigorous, it is also very fun for those who enjoy art and design.
-
You don't have to become an art & design major in college to explore your creativity in this class! Do you want to explore your imaginative and creative side? Are you curious about the design industry? Would you like to develop your problem solving and critical thinking skills in depth? If so, you stand to benefit if you take any art class, but may especially find what you are looking for in Design Concepts.
-
Students who are interested in other fields related to design are also suited for this class. Even if you are thinking about a career that is not directly covered in this class, such as game design, animation, architecture, fashion design, don't worry! The fields we do cover in this class (graphic design, communication design, advertising, illustration, product design, furniture design and transportation design) are very closely related to all art and design fields and careers and offer strong foundational basics for becoming a great artist or designer.
