On Thursday, May 12, twenty-nine students and three staff members attended an incredible field trip on The Inland Seas Schooner in Sutton’s Bay, Michigan. We left Smith at 6:45 a.m. and took a rented motor coach to our destination just north of Traverse City. On The Inland Seas, students were placed in small groups where they rotated through six different stations that taught them all about the life cycle of Lake Michigan. This program provided our students with a direct connection to the world beyond the classroom, and gave them a hands-on educational experience not possible in a school setting. Students learned all about the schooner itself, they took measurements and readings and determined all the information necessary to create a weather station for our trip. Students had the opportunity to take water samples that determined the types and amounts of plankton and sediment we collected. While collecting the water samples, we also brought on board a small sampling of the fish and crustaceans in Lake Michigan and identified them by characteristics. Students learned about the geography of the area and how to navigate The Inland Seas. They were able to determine and chart our course on West Bay. We left for home at 6 pm and returned to Smith around 11pm. Everyone was tired, but the day was beautiful and the experience was very rewarding and educational!
