Self Portrait - Sydney Wlodyka

My name is Sydney Wlodyka. I am a junior at Edsel Ford High School. I am very active at Edsel Ford, including the Gymnastics team as a Beam worker and Manager, Marching Band as Color Guard, Concert Band where I play cornet, Orchestra where I play cello, Art Club, Photo Club, and Yearbook. In addition, I am in Michigan Demolay, where I am Clifford C. Reeves Sweetheart, and I plan on running for Michigan State Sweetheart in August of 2007. I plan on continuing my education in a career in Digital Photography or Graphic Design, and I hope to own my own photography business. I don’t know where I want to go to college yet, but I have been looking into colleges in Massachusetts because that's where most of the photography schools that I am intrested in are located. Photography is my passion.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

Semester One

In semester one we began working with Photoshop for the first time. Everything we did was based on Graphic Design and Advertising. For many of the students in this class this was their first time using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. We began with the basics and worked from there. The hardest part for me was taking an original drawn design (on paper) and creating it on the computer. But after several times of doing this, I have accomplished this goal and can do it quite easily.

Add Shapes to Image

In this project we took images and cropped them or changed them in some way to show geometric shapes. To add some interest, I added the purple flower to bring some contrast to all the yellow ones.

Create an Image Using Layers

Here we began working with layers and again working with how to crop the images differently. Also we began working with text and how to edit that into the images correctly.

Incorporating Images

Here we combined many images together. In this project I used three different images, one of a ferris wheel, one of a flower, and i used the firework image twice.

The images used here are my own original photographs.

Face and Place

Here we took an image of a person and morphed it with an animal, mystical creature or inanimate object. I took an image of myself and made it into a robot. I took this project as what society does to everyone. For the background I made a pretend newspaper from New York with headlines about people turning into robots, and the world coming to an end as we know it.

Text and Shape

For this project we had the guidelines of making something we would find in a magazine, using three elements: text, graphic shape, and imagery. When given this project I thought of a page before an article that would introduce the article.

Word Design

Here we had to take words and create the literal word meaning using only black and white, opposite words, and only one specific type (font). I chose ocean and stream as my words. My favorite out of the two is the ocean design because it actually looks like an ocean. It was also a lot harder to do, and it felt good once I finished it.

Magazine Ad

This was probably my favorite project we did the entire semester. Here we took a product we chose, and changed the demographic. The demographic is who it's targeted towards. I chose Double Mint Gum and instead of having it traditionally targeted towards the twins, I targeted it towards two opposite generations, and it making it represent who you are.

Puma Ad

Here we had to pick a subbrand of Puma and design an ad to go along with their website. The subbrand I chose was Nuala which is a branch targeted towards dancers, yoga goers, and active, natural women. Within the two Design Concepts class we had a competition that our teachers voted on. I came in 3rd place in my class.

Finial Exam Semester One

In our finial exam we had 2 class periods to take images and create something targeted at a specific demographic. We could only use the images our teacher provided us with and we had to show balance, emphasis, and movement, as well we had to have a color scheme and either a descriptive caption or a smart, catchy slogan.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

Semester Two

In semester two we started working on drawing objects in 3D and rendering them. This is what we call Visual Communication.

Perspective Exercise

Here we began working in perspective which means using the correct height, width, and length of things according to two point perspective. We learned how to draw cubes, cylinders, spheres, and other 3D Shapes in perspective.

Rendering Project

In these two project we had to render shapes. Rendering is realistic illustration with showing light, shadow and detail. One form is taking markers of either warm or cool grays and using them to shade a 3D form. Here we rendered a cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone in perspective.

Rendering, Shading, Hatching, Stippling and Cross-Hatching

For these two pages we had to show rendered forms by using shading, hatching, stippling and cross-hatching in persepective with using all the basic forms.

Speed Form

The chair drawing (above) through the mices drawings (below) are speed forms . A speed form is drawing an object in 3D fast. Its getting the basic shape of an object, as well as noting certain characteristics about a shape.

Mouse Design

For this project we had two parts. The first part was to design a new inventive mouse. You could go the path of designing a mouse with new features, or something as simple as different design aspects to it. For mine i designed a mouse that looked like a converse shoe and a mouse with a fancy light design around the side. Mouse Powerpoint.

Box Design

The second part of the project was to then design a box for our mouse design. It had to be something to catch the attention of customers but not be too flashy.

Box Powerpoint.

Finial Exam Semester Two

Here we were given the Michael Berry Career Center Logo and were told we had to edit it to make our own logo. We had to have the original in our new logo atleast once, and we had to come up with our own set color scheme. We as well had to add shapes and other forms to make the new logo our own. Keeping distinct details of the orginal logo were important as well. We were only allowed to use certain text and had to have certain things on our design.
