Paul Iacoban

Hey there, I'm Paul Iacoban. I'm a senior at Fordson High School but I also attend MBCC for half the day. I am taking Design Concepts at MBCC in order to accomplish my dream of becoming a designer. I want to become an industrial designer and eventually work for a major design firm, building and designing furniture and products.

I plan on attending HFCC in the fall in order to complete all of my prerequisites before transferring to a four year university. I would like to attend CCS (College for Creative Studies) but for now I plan on attending University of Michigan or Wayne State University.

I like to draw and design various things to make them better as I see them. In my spare time I can be found drawing, sleeping, playing guitar, hockey, or just hanging out with my friends. My big piece of advice to all aspiring artists out there is to not get discouraged and keep on practicing. I could not draw at all when I was little but through practice I got to where I am at. Keep at it and Good Luck!

   art college  website design

Objective: Design a website for a fictional art college along with an advertisement and cover page for a view book.

I decided on a college of design in Detroit, using the black and blue color scheme to represent the blue collar character of Detroit.

Basically this is the main page, directing students visiting the site to the different sections. I placed emphasis on Detroit because I felt visitors need to see that it is a Detroit college and to emphasize the name of the college.

One of the programs featured at this college is Industrial Design. This is the main page for the industrial design program, again featuring the same color scheme as before and much of the same layout and style.

My favorite page, mainly because of the visual effect of  the car running of the page. This is another of the programs I decided to feature for this college, seeing that Detroit is the auto capital of the world. Located in Detroit, this college has to offer an auto design program so I added one. Notice how the color scheme and style do not change throughout.

An advertisement poster representing the fictional college. Again I felt emphasis should be placed on where the college is with the large "D" logo and Detroit skyline. The color scheme and the style all work together to combine each element of the design together. I believe that this was one of my best works for the art college project.

This is the cover of the view book used to attract people to the college. A very simple design yet very effective, combining emphasis with the "D" yet a sense of balance and unity with the color scheme and style.

I hope you enjoyed each of the parts of this fictional college. Maybe one day I will be doing this for real, creating a campaign like this for a real college.

       spare time

learning photoshop

There were some parts on the

class where I had some time

to explore through many of the programs, mainly in the beginning of the class. It was basically a period where I was getting myself familiar with the programs in order to do the more advanced things seen above. Enjoy!

Basically I took a picture of a Dodge Viper and using various other pictures that I combined with it, I created this. I got the idea from an Adobe Photoshop tutorial.

This is my car, tricked out as I saw fit. The original is the smaller image and the modification in Photoshop is the larger image. Its pretty amazing what one can do with Photoshop if you take the time.

  space scenes

I really enjoy working with Photoshop to create various scenes of space environments. These are just a few beginning scenes but I do plan on creating more as I learn more and more about Photoshop and its many features. Enjoy!

The first scene I had created in Photoshop. Each of the elements I created myself except the rocket, which was an imported image. Not that good but again it was the first I had done.

My next scene, again created in Photoshop and each element created by me. No imported images this time as each element was created using various filters and effects. It is seen as a probe would view the solar system looking back from Mars.

Each of theses various activities helped me learn the program in order to do the more advanced

things later on that I had to do for the art school design. So as you see, small and simple practices can lead to larger and better things.

    semester 3

 IKEA design

Objective: Design a furniture piece using the theme and the mission goals of IKEA. In other words create a piece of furniture that embodies the cheap yet stylish modern philosophy.

This is the display page showing all the inspiration going into my IKEA furniture design. After visiting the store, I descided on using a combination of these elements to create a new piece.

Ideation page in which I began to get ideas down on paper. These were very quick sketches and some do not even resemble the final product but it was a start. This porvided the basis for creating an entertainment center, getting ideas down on paper and evolving each idea.

The piece starts to take form, as seen in these developed drawings. The curved sides attached to the base is a signature piece that is in the final design. Notice how the design becomes more and more streamlined and stylish as the process moves on.

Approaching the end and some of the final design sketches. Each sketch represents steps I took in designing the furniture piece, from basic frontal view to more complex perspective view. However even though this is almost the end of exploring the design, there is still Rhino, a software used for building objects in 3-D and renderings that must get done!

Finally the last sketch and the last renderings are comlete. However this step took a while as I had to think about the type of wood to use and color of the piece. Each of these factors had to be considered in rendering the furniture as well as the source of light. Though I probably am done with drawing there is still an entire portion of Rhino work, building the piece.

 "TENCH"

First basic rendering of the furniture piece, done in simple rendering without any materials added.

Complete rendering of the final piece with all materials added on. With the final rendering there has to be a name added to the product. I think that Tench would be a proper name, fitting the quality of a TV bench entertainment center.

Inclined perspective view of the Tench gives everyone the ability to see what the Tench is made of. Polished birch wood makes up the essential part for the Tench while polished mahogany provides the shelves.

The final rendering, as viewed from the front of the Tench. As it can be easily seen, the shelves and base are made of different types of wood while the top storage space is made from stained brown glass.

This is just one of the ways the Tench can be used, as a TV bench. However it can be used as a gaming center or just simply a storage space for a vase and books. The wood design fits in well with a home featuring many wood products as you can see in this image.

Many practical uses for one product is one of the main ideas as a driving force behind the ideation of  the Tench. A simple yet attractive and stylish design embodies the IKEA ideation, followed here in the design of the Tench. This allows for a relatively cheap product yet attractive enough that the customer who appreciates modern design can buy the Tench for their home.

rhino start

This was my first Rhino project during the second year, creating a slipper in my spare time. After I created the slipper I decided to create my first design campaign.

Working in Rhino with the slipper, right after I started to render it. The slipper was fairly easy to create with a combination of shapes and pieces.

One of the final renderings in Rhino of the slipper viewed from the back side. Notice the way the foot fits in to the slot of the shoe.

The advertisement itself, featuring the slipper and different views from various angles. I went along with the colors of the slipper for the advertisement.

This early rhino project helped me on my way to creating the Tench. Again as you can see, simple and basic led to more advanced projects so even if it seems pointless, stick with it because it gets better with time.

 final projects

   semester 4

Objective: Design a product that represents a collection of learned abilities and skills in Design Concepts up to this point. Designed product can be based on Automootive design, Product design, or Graphical design.

For my final project I decided upon designing a product, namely a toy for children ages 3-9 years. Click on the powerpoint show link below to view the entire process of design from conceptual stages until the final finishing touches are put on.

semester 4

   semester 2

teapot project

This was the major project of the second semester of the first year, creating a teapot and building it in Rhino. It began with simple sketches of very simple forms and eventually moving on to more complex shapes and combinations of shapes. After sketching the teapot, one of the requirements was to create it in Rhino and render the product as would appear on a consumer's table.

These are a collection of the best rederings and sketechs I drew during the project. Most of the rederings were done just as I learned to render properly. Both of these parts of the project were combined together to create a display for the product.

   semester 1

mouse project

This was the final project completed in the first semester. After learning how to draw basic shapes and later advancing to freeforms, we moved on to rendering forms. Finally this was brought into Rhino to be created and the project was brought together, all the pieces combined. The Rhino product mouse was combined with an advertisement campaign  wnd with starting sketches to create an advertisement for the mouse.
